The Nazis used Terezín as a massive propaganda tool. They dressed it up as a "retirement settlement" or spa town for elderly, disabled, or prominent Jews to hide the reality of the genocide from the International Red Cross.
Because the camp held many celebrated European artists, writers, musicians, and intellectuals, a secret underground cultural life flourished. Inmates secretly gave lectures, wrote poetry, composed music, and created powerful artwork that documented the grim reality of the ghetto, preserving their human dignity amid unimaginable suffering.
